Professionals and Families Helping Teens Face Addiction Problems

Drugs and alcohol addiction has reached the epidemic level in United States. Worse yet, there are kids that are dying using these substances. We all need help in addressing and fighting the adolescent drug addiction. Our kids need help to face abuse and addiction issues and get their lives back.

Unfortunately the statistics are not in our favor. Year after year the incidents of teen drug abuse and death from overdoses are going higher and higher. The problem is getting worse when you look into the ease with which teens have access to prescription medication. No one talked about teen prescription drug abuse a decade ago. Today we are learning about “pharm parties”, the type of party where teens bring pills from their homes and dump them into a large bowl for everybody to reach and pick one as if they were jelly beans. Mostly, they ingest the pills but other times they crush the pills and snort, smoke or inject the powder. In the case of OxyContin, this has led to heart attacks and comma, when the pain medication, meant as a time-release drug, quickly reaches the bloodstream. These parties are a tragedy waiting to happen.

We at Inspirations for teens offer hope and inspiration to our teens and parents. During all the years that we have been providing treatment for alcohol and drug abuse, there has not been one single case that a child came into our substance abuse treatment facility and did not have a dream for his or her future. Kids, regardless of how carelessly they throw away their hopes and future, still dream about a better tomorrow and a better life. We owe it to our kids to show them the path back to a normal and productive life. As Karen Walsh, co-founder of Inspirations Youth and Families, says: “Every child has a dream. If we can show them that they haven’t destroyed it, then we have something to work with.” As professionals and the family, we and you have to work together in the hardest times of our kid’s life to help them rescue their future.

In such critical and vulnerable ages of our teens lives, it is sad to know that not even one third of adolescents who need help for substance abuse, received specialty treatment, in part because such facilities are few and far between.

Inspirations Youth and Families staffed with masters level therapists has specific programs designed to address the present and future of teen addiction. Inspirations focuses on continued education with its on-site school programs and its 90-day residential addiction treatment program emphasizes on living skills. Each of our youth is responsible for cooking, keeping their apartment in the villa, laundry and grocery shopping. They also have the opportunity to re-enter the real world, participating in outdoor activities such as going to the movies, attending a gym, bowling, skating and participating of several local seasonal recreational activities.

Chris Walsh, also co-founder of Inspirations, worked on secluded facilities prior to establishing his own adolescent addiction treatment and he found that patients who relapsed, most often, were those who were not ready to deal with the outside world. He says. “ We bring the world to the teens and make sure they are engaging it …… we want them to use the tools available to make healthy choices.”

If you suspect your child is abusing drugs or alcohol, seek professional help and remember these three C's: that 'you didn't Cause, can't Control and can't Cure' your child's problems. But you can and must take charge and seek help for your child. The earlier you act upon your child’s addiction problems the better off your child will be.

Prescription Drugs Are Stealing Lives

There is a misconception with overdoses; drug users are no longer just minorities, delinquents, or people from low-income neighborhoods, specially, when it comes to the new drug trend of abusing prescription pain killers. This abuse is leading to overdoses and the overdoses are killing teens coming from all levels of income with caring and loving parents. According to a nationwide study in comparing car crash deaths to prescription drug overdoses, 45,000 die due to car fatalities while 39,000 die due to prescription medication overdose.

The main sources of teen overdoses are opiate prescription pain killers. The major problem is the teenagers’ lack of understanding of the addictive side of prescription drugs as well as its danger. Pain killers are highly addictive and create problems besides overdoses. Attitudes and behavior change, grades start to drop, and worst of all, they lead to other drugs. It is common for prescription medications to be gateway drugs. Often when the price of buying these prescription pills on the street gets too high, people turn to heroine, since pain pills mimic a heroine high.

In fact recently 30 teens in a treatment facility for addiction to opiates have admitted to turning to heroine as a cheaper solution to their addiction. When asking the experts, One Oxycontin pill costs about $80, a gram of cocaine is $50, and heroin is even cheaper at about $10 a bag. When people are addicted to getting high, they do not focus on how they are getting high as long as they are somehow somewhere. These prescription opiates are easily available in medicine cabinets and through friends. The addiction and overdoses are problems in addition to death which can be easily caused by mixing the pain killers with other drugs and or alcohol. The mixing of substances is not uncommon and more than often lead to negative effects.

Inspirations Teen Rehab encourages Massachusetts’ teens to leave their everyday lifestyle by immersing themselves in a new and different environment during the addiction treatment process. Inspirations Teen Rehab is known for a unique approach to "Real Life" Teen Addiction Treatment and Recovery.

Drug Rehab for Massachusetts' Teens
Inspirations Teen Rehab, MA includes a mix of both inpatient and outpatient addiction programs, to meet our teens specific “Goals of Treatment” which are identified during their assessment with our Client Liaison Team. Intensive Outpatient Treatment incorporates the comprehensive addiction treatment program and "Real Life" approach to recovery in a flexible therapeutic schedule.
When our Massachusetts addiction treatment specialists makes a recommendation on individualized addiction treatment programs, we recognize that in most cases, an addiction or mood disorder isn’t the only issue. For example, a teen with depression may also be battling a co-occurring addiction such as alcoholism. Tackling multiple issues requires a more comprehensive strategy than tackling one issue alone, and will be accommodated in the suggested addiction treatment program.

Our aim is to treat the whole person, and not just an isolated symptom. During addiction treatment we will work with the teen to identify the factors that may have contributed to their addiction or disorder – home, work, relationships and medical history. We also believe that families have a vital role to play in the teen's recovery process, and each program has a place for family participation, to educate them in the addiction treatment process and to equip them for their role as supporters.

Inspirations Teen Rehab provides Massachusetts Teens with the following services: Interventions, Mental Health Treatment, Dual Diagnosis Treatment, Eating Disorders Treatment and Court Ordered Rehabilitation.

Teen Drug Rehab Therapy Programs in Massachusetts Includes: Psychotherapy, Trauma Therapy, Co-Dependency Therapy, Art Therapy, Music Therapy, Recreational Activities (Sober Fun), Relapse Prevention, Family and Group Therapies.

Oxycodone abuse is becoming a national phenomenon among teens

Oxycodone, also called oxy or O.C., has become the cocaine among teens. Oxy price ranges from $20 to $60 a pill and when teens can no longer afford O.C., they are turning to heroin which is cheaper but just as potent and deadly as Oxycodone.

Our clinical supervisor has reported an increase on clients/teens with oxy addictions coming in last fall to our youth addiction drug and alcohol treatment center. This comes to us as no surprise as we know that prescription drugs are readily available in high schools throughout the country.

What is really alarming is that teens are reporting that they are smoking the pills instead of swallowing or snorting them. Smoking pills is more dangerous than taking them by mouth or snorting them, because the drug goes directly from the lungs to the brain, instead of being slowly absorbed through the stomach, kidney and other organs.

Sadly, Oxycodone is considered a status symbol among affluent teens and when they no longer can afford these pills they often turn to heroin which is just as potent and deadly.
