Parents who Experienced the Destruction of K2 Warning Families of its Dangers

While a statewide ban in on a potentially fatal drug commonly known as “K2” or “fake weed” has been put into place in Georgia to protect vulnerable teens, parents of former K2 users warn other parents about the dangerous side effects of this drug.

Due to its inability to be detected by drug tests, K2 or “fake weed” which consists of an herbal mixture and spice plant products, had long been considered a safe alternative to common weed. The Rice family of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania took their 13 year old son Ray to the hospital after having shown heart attack symptoms. He was rushed to the emergency room and was later diagnosed with burns on his two collapsed lungs. The cause of his sudden illness was mysterious until his father found K2 in his room.

Ray remains sedated in the ICU where his family can only hope he recovers from the effects of the drug that has put him and his family through such distress.

Teens using ‘Party drugs’ feed addiction denial

An increase in the use of party drugs is beginning to worry authorities.



The majority of individuals who use party drugs regularly, notably adolescents under the age of 21, don’t believe they have an addiction.

Ohio's Youth Drug Abuse Problems

Drug Policies and the Evolving Trends

In this day and age, although society seems to be growing and expanding faster than people can keep up with it, science and technology still strive to stay ahead of the game. But who are the “trendsetters” and whose best interest do they have at heart? When it comes to substance abuse– the play changes and ball is always in somebody else’s court. Teenagers are turning to drugs of the day before they get banned. States have generally updated their controlled substance laws through the legislative process, but there is growing pressure for that to change. New regulations or updates to existing laws often take multiple attempts and years to gain legislative approval, which means many substances that prove to be harmful and even on occasions deadly, stay legal and remain on the market. Parents of teenagers are very worried for their kids’ safety. They see their kids taking substances such as salvia, a leafy sage plant that produces a hallucinogenic effect. It is smoked, chewed or taken in a potent distilled liquid extract form. The drug, which is legal, recently was in the news being used by Iowa teens. It costs as little as $9 a hit. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency has issued warnings about the substance and this is the fifth consecutive year that state officials have tried to ban the drug, but still, to no avail. This is at least the third or fourth time that this salvia bill has been presented, Mark Smith of the state public defender's office told lawmakers last week. He added that if somebody besides the Legislature had the authority to regulate where these drugs go, this could have been dealt with four or five years ago.

Some state and national drug control advocates said it would be in everyone’s best interest to adopt a process similar to the one in Minnesota. There, the state's board of pharmacy can update controlled substance laws on its own; a process that often can be completed in four to six months vs. potentially years through the legislative process. However, the Minnesota Legislature can review or make changes as it sees fit. "In Wisconsin, a controlled substance board can update or enact the state's rules on potentially harmful drugs. That process, which can take more than a year, involves review from a legislative committee. The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, a professional advocacy group in Illinois, also encourages states to adopt processes like those in Minnesota, where a regulatory board can change drug laws without needing legislative approval." - Jason Clayworth, DesMoinesRegister.com. Many legislatures, like Iowa, are in session only part of the year, making it hard for the state to quickly enact or update drug restrictions.

Legislators Hesitate to Give Power to Board Two Republican lawmakers on the House Public Safety Committee, which oversees much of the state's drug law, expressed deep concerns about the prospect of the Legislature turning over rule-making authority to a state board. "I'm all for making the code shorter, but the one hesitancy, especially for us who have been here for a while, is that the authority by rule-making just scares the bejesus out of us," said Rep. Tom Sands, R-Wapello, a member of the House Public Safety Committee. Rep. Mark Smith, D-Marshalltown, has introduced a bill, House File 29, that would grant the state's pharmacy board more temporary rule-making authority to place limits on controlled substances until the Legislature could meet to review the issues. "What scare the bejeebies out of me is young people accessing these substances," Smith said. "My feeling is that it's in the public's interest to be able to act quickly and get these substances off of the market."

Teen Cocaine Abuse and Addiction Treatment

Cocaine is a strong addictive stimulant that produces an intense euphoria. Teens can abuse cocaine by snorting or injecting it into the veins after dissolving the powder in water. They can also abuse cocaine/crack by smoking it alone or mixing it with either marijuana or tobacco. Teens also abuse cocaine in combination with an opiate, like heroin, a practice known as "speedballing." Although injecting into veins or muscles, snorting, and smoking are the common ways of using cocaine, all mucous membranes readily absorb cocaine. Cocaine users typically binge on the drug until they are exhausted or run out of cocaine.

The intensity of cocaine’s euphoric effects depends on how quickly the drug reaches the brain, which depends on the dose and method of abuse. Following smoking or intravenous injection, cocaine reaches the brain in seconds, with a rapid buildup in levels. This results in a rapid-onset, intense euphoric effect known as a “rush.” By contrast, the euphoria caused by snorting cocaine is less intense and does not happen as quickly due to the slower build-up of the drug in the brain. Other effects include increased alertness and excitation, as well as restlessness, irritability, and anxiety in some users. Physiological effects of cocaine include increased blood pressure and heart rate, dilated pupils, insomnia and loss of appetite. The widespread abuse of highly pure street cocaine has led to many severe adverse health consequences such as cardiac arrhythmias, ischemic heart conditions, sudden cardiac arrest, convulsions, strokes and death. In some users, the long-term use of inhaled cocaine has led to a unique respiratory syndrome, and chronic snorting of cocaine has led to the erosion of the upper nasal cavity.

Tolerance to cocaine’s effects develops rapidly, causing users to take higher and higher doses. Taking high doses of cocaine or prolonged use, such as binging, usually causes paranoia. The crash that follows euphoria is characterized by mental and physical exhaustion, sleep, and depression lasting several days. Following the crash, users experience a craving to use cocaine again.

Overdose effects include agitation, increased body temperature, hallucinations, convulsions and possible death.

In the early stages of drug use/abuse it is difficult to separate typical adolescent behavior from chemically induced behavior. Some teens may not show obvious symptoms even in more advanced stages, and the parent may only sense something is wrong. Most teens, however, will exhibit many of the signs above, which can develop over a period of a few months or years. Parents Beware as This New Drug “Charge” Does Not Show up on Regular Drug Tests

In Tupelo Mississippi a teen has lost his life due to a new drug addiction. Not a street or club drug we all know about, but a household item, Ivory Wave bath salt. This new addiction has spread fairly fast in the surrounding communities in Mississippi. As local newspapers report: “Misuse of the bath salt has the same effects as meth, and is actually banned in Scotland following related deaths. Now, Lee County authorities have learned of local usage through domestic disturbances.”

They are calling the bath salts synthetic cocaine. The usage of this product is a fast-growing, highly addictive trend. Young people are saying they can’t get enough of the fake coke, and it's doing a lot of damage. Teens are reporting that they were using K-2 but have moved on to the fake coke “Charge” now.

“Bath salts” or “Charge” or “Ivory,” the new “Miaow, Miaow”, they’re different names for different types of cocaine substitutes. People say it looks just like cocaine, but what it does to you is even worse.

A relative of an Ivory Wave bath salt addict who wants to remain anonymous describes watching her loved one going through mayhem. "Within thirty minutes after he got home he was what they call 'geeking out.' He was walking around the yard with a flashlight and looking under bushes. He got all the paperwork out of his truck. You could say something and he thought you were talking about him."

Ivory Wave bath salt is a cheap way to get high. Family members are reporting that their loved ones are staying awake for as long as 72 hours in complete pandemonium. This new addiction is landing teens and adults in the emergency rooms.

Lee County Sheriff, Jim Johnson says: "Hallucinations, seeing things that weren't there. We had one individual in the backseat of our car that was just absolutely paranoid because he felt like cars were trying to run over him while he was in the patrol car."

Some local stores have pulled the product out of their shelves after finding out about the local disturbances related to the misuse of the salt bath. For now, as it is legal and there is no penalty for selling the product some stores are keeping Ivory Wave bath salts it in stock, sadly cashing in on the addiction of others.

What is triple C?

Triple C, or Cordies depending on what part of the country you are from is a slang term for the over-the-counter medication Coricidin HBP Cough & Cold and it is the most recent drug that teenagers are using to get high. They are available as red tablets containing 30 milligrams of dextromethorphan. It is likely that individuals abuse similar products, which may include Coricidin HBP Chest Congestion & Cough (available as softgels containing 10 milligrams of dextromethorphan) and Coricidin HBP Maximum Strength Flu (available as tablets containing 15 milligrams of dextromethorphan).

Recently a family came to us with their 15 year old daughter that had just experienced the effects of Triple C. The family reported that their daughter has never taken drugs before. It is amazing to see that what prompted her to start using these drugs were pure pressure to fit in a new school. She was told specifically by a friend, to fit in use triple C. Little did she knew triple C only helped her to fit in the emergency room. It took a whole day at the emergency room and 3 days at home for her to become normal again. She had the shakes, clinched teeth, dilated pupils, aching muscles and double vision. She did not remember even going to the emergency room. She vaguely recalls been sexually abused by the same friend who introduced her to triple C. She reports that she spent maybe hours in straight silence, going out of her mind thinking about things such as life, death, future, time travel, just things she could never imagine in a normal state.

Her parents later learned that this was the rave in her new school. It is sad to think teens feel like taking these drugs as an answer to their social problems. So parents you should be watching out if your child is spending too much time in his/her room, does not want to eat anything and it is loosing a lot of wait. Next, if they start taking to many trips CVS or Walgreens, check out what they are buying, and look around the garbage and in random spots they would try to hide things.

Teen Addiction Treatment Center Reports Adolescent Drug Abuse in …

In Northwest Broward county (Parkland, Margate and Coconut Creek area), our intake records of adolescent patients indicate the following drugs of abuse: opiates (oxycotin), marijuana and pills such as (benzodiazpines-Xanex most often). Alcohol is most often reported to be taken from home and friends homes.

Also the “Trible C’s” known as Cold, Cough and Congestion medicine are reported to be stolen from local pharmacies, crushed and snorted by teens. The active ingredient is Dextromethorphan (DXM) which produces a hallucinogenic high that some teens seek.
