Learn from a Young Lady - Understanding the Side Effects of Painkillers Can Avoid an Addiction

With massive numbers of its young adults using prescription medication, West New York is looking at epidemic levels of prescription pill addiction.

One time straight A student, Destinee Henderson, knows all too well about prescription pill addiction and its detrimental side effects. The all-American teenage sweetheart began taking prescription medication after being diagnosed with a female health disorder- endometriosis. She was initially given hydrocodone, then Percocet and eventually Oxycontin.

This average all American teen, who was completely oblivious to the side effects  and addictive nature of the drugs she was taking every day, eventually noticed she was unable to function without the medication that would give her a powerful sense of euphoria she had never experienced before. Henderson’s life began to spiral out of control as she scrambled to find money to buy more pills and hide her addiction from her loved ones. She was forced to become a prostitute to pay for her expenses and eventually turned to heroin, a cheap alternative to prescription medication.

Following her arrest for cashing a stolen check, she was offered the possibility of entering a drug diversion program designed to help individuals overcome addiction. Fortunately,  she graduated from the program a year and a half ago and has been drug drug-free since.

Henderson, who believes she’s lucky to be alive after her ordeal, wants to share her story and warn us of just how addicting prescription drugs can be even when taken for prescribed medical reasons.

Teens and the Dangers of Social Media

A recent study published by Columbia University's National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse reported that teens who regularly accessed social profiling networks such as Facebook and Myspace were twice as likely to succumb to recreational drugs, twice as likely to consume alcohol and to smoke marijuana, and five times likelier to use tobacco after having being exposed to it via pictures, comments and blogs on popular social networking websites.

Furthermore, the study revealed that 40% of the teenagers had seen images or read blogs on other teens getting drunk or using tobacco, and roughly 70% of them reported logging on to a social networking websites on a daily basis.

Joseph Califano, former U.S Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare, also founder of Columbia University’s National center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA), strongly believes that "The relationship of social networking site images of kids drunk, passed out, or using drugs and of suggestive teen programming to increased teen risk of substance abuse offers grotesque confirmation of the adage that a picture is worth a thousand words."

Califano also believes that it is time for website administrators and all others whom benefit from these websites take responsibility and “deploy their technological expertise to curb such images and to deny use of their sites to children and teens who post pictures of themselves and their friends drunk, passed out or using drugs".

Teen drug abuse is rampant say cops and counselors in Pleasanton, CA

With half of its student body confessing to smoking marijuana, the school administrators and parents of Hart Middle School, located in Pleasanton, California were shocked after a recent PTA meeting which discussed the dangerous trends amongst the schools’ students.

After interviewing the students of Hart middle school, counselor Tammy Schoonover estimated that 25% of the students drank alcohol and 50% smoked marijuana.

Officer Ryan Tujague, a member of the police department's special enforcement unit warned parents that even the brightest of students were succumbing to marijuana, OxyContin, heroin and other substances, often fooling their unsuspecting parents who could never imagine their daughter/son was purchasing and using illegal drugs to achieve dangerous highs.

Tujague also pointed out the growing crime rate correlated with the growing number of addicts, so often young teens, who are committing the pettiest of crimes in order to be able to purchase drugs and feed their addiction.

Teens using ‘Party drugs’ feed addiction denial

An increase in the use of party drugs is beginning to worry authorities.

The majority of individuals who use party drugs regularly, notably adolescents under the age of 21, don’t believe they have an addiction.

“The majority of teens who use party drugs do not believe they have a problem and normally they are younger than the heroin addicts,” said the president of the Association for the Rehabilitation of Drug Abusers.

The abuse of ketamine and other party drugs has been linked to an array of cognitive difficulties, brain damage, heart failure, delirium and in some cases, death.

Many believe that the underlying problem is the large scale of unawareness amongst the nation's youth, who fail to see the detrimental effects of their drug abuse.

Prescription Drugs Are Stealing Lives

There is a misconception with overdoses; drug users are no longer just minorities, delinquents, or people from low-income neighborhoods, specially, when it comes to the new drug trend of abusing prescription pain killers. This abuse is leading to overdoses and the overdoses are killing teens coming from all levels of income with caring and loving parents. According to a nationwide study in comparing car crash deaths to prescription drug overdoses, 45,000 die due to car fatalities while 39,000 die due to prescription medication overdose.

The main sources of teen overdoses are opiate prescription pain killers. The major problem is the teenagers’ lack of understanding of the addictive side of prescription drugs as well as its danger. Pain killers are highly addictive and create problems besides overdoses. Attitudes and behavior change, grades start to drop, and worst of all, they lead to other drugs. It is common for prescription medications to be gateway drugs. Often when the price of buying these prescription pills on the street gets too high, people turn to heroine, since pain pills mimic a heroine high.

In fact recently 30 teens in a treatment facility for addiction to opiates have admitted to turning to heroine as a cheaper solution to their addiction. When asking the experts, One Oxycontin pill costs about $80, a gram of cocaine is $50, and heroin is even cheaper at about $10 a bag. When people are addicted to getting high, they do not focus on how they are getting high as long as they are somehow somewhere. These prescription opiates are easily available in medicine cabinets and through friends. The addiction and overdoses are problems in addition to death which can be easily caused by mixing the pain killers with other drugs and or alcohol. The mixing of substances is not uncommon and more than often lead to negative effects.

How to Tell if my Teen is Using Drugs or Drinking?

Let’s face it; it can be difficult for a parent to confirm if a child is using drugs or alcohol. Of course a parent can catch a teen in the act or find evidence in their bedroom; however in most cases it is not that simple. According to timetoact.drugfree.org, there are steps and signs to help.

1. Ask: If you and your teen have open lines of communication, then this would a good first step for you. Be careful not to attack your teen; you want to avoid escalating the situation to where the teen becomes defensive or tries to run away.

2. There are signs that can help you identify if your teen is using or drinking:

• Behavioral Issues: Mood swings, unusually tired, very silent, decrease of inhibitions, lack of motivation, unusual clumsiness, poor balance, uncoordinated, obnoxious behavior, laughing at nothing, secretive, depression, hostile/angry, awake for long periods of time followed by long sleep periods, slur speech, unable to form sentences. Change in relationships with family members or friends.

• Personal Appearance: Poor hygiene, mess/unclean clothes, careless appearance, burns or ashes on fingers/lips, flushed cheeks or face, track marks on arms/legs and long sleeves/pants in warm weather.

• A Change in Personal Habits: locking bedroom doors, going out every night, disrespecting family, new group of friends, smell of smoke on clothes/breath, heavy consumption of chewing gum or mints, use of eye drops, frequently breaking curfew, money problems, reckless driving or accidents, avoiding eye contact, sudden use of candles/ air fresheners, clenched teeth, secret phone calls/text messages and munchies or increase in snacks and appetite.

• School/Work Issues: loss of interest, grades dropping, decrease participation in hobbies/ sports, skipping class, complaints from teachers or coworkers, getting into fights, not fulfilling duties.

• Health Issues: Nose bleeds, frequent sickness, dramatic weight loss/gain, accidents, bruises, headaches, sweatiness, vomiting, seizures, and excessive thirst.

• Home/Car Problems: prescriptions disappearing, missing cigarettes/alcohol, money/valuables missing, unusual smells, containers, wrappers, seeds, pipes/bongs in glove box, rolling papers, increase in lighters.

One of these problems alone is not enough to confirm that your teen is using drugs or drinking, but could be a result of normal teenage growth. However, if you begin to see many changes and an increase in the areas mentioned above than you mihgt want to contact Inspirations Teen Rehab to help your teen.

Inspirations for Youth and Families aka, Inspirations Teen Rehab is here to help your teen and your family through this difficult process.
