Underage Drinking Ordinance Curtailed in Kinnelon, New Jersey

While many New Jersey municipalities have adopted tough laws on underage drinking in hopes of curtailing it, officials in Kinnelon, New Jersey have decided to foster a different approach.

Despite disapproval from many sources including local law enforcement, officials in Kinnelon tabled an underage drinking ordinance, promising to create a committee to come up with an alternative solution. Police Chief John Finkle, who supports the tough ordinance on underage drinking, stated that the current statute did not deter juveniles from drinking on private property while the proposed ordinance would certainly have done so.

While many hope the council adopts the ordinance and creates tough consequences on non-law abiding teens, such as license suspension and considerable fines, many parents in the community have expressed their disapproval. At a recent school board meeting, school board president Margaret Zybrick told parents and the board she believed underage drinkers should be educated and not punished when they made a mistake, such as drinking.

"Kids are bound to make mistakes. I think the repercussions of their actions should be done in a way that they learn from their mistakes and are not brow beaten from them," said Zybrick.
And while the community is divided on adopting the ordinance, it remains to be seen whether the curtailment of the ordinance and the adoption of other effective alternatives produces better results in the community.

Teen Behavior and Alcohol Abuse Problems? Don't let your Child become a statistic.

The younger your teen is when they start drinking, the greater their chance of becoming addicted to alcohol at some point in their lives. More than 4 in 10 people who begin drinking before age 15 eventually become alcoholic.

It is important for parents to know the facts about alcohol and drug use and to be prepared, considering nearly a third of 12 and 13-year-olds has been offered and used an illicit drug. However, it’s promising that when teens know the facts, dangers, and risks associated with drug use they are 42% less likely to use them.

Binge-drinking and underage drinking in America

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, North Dakota was pronounced the state with the highest percentage of binge drinking nationwide.

The study also included that binge drinking or consuming five or more drinks on one occasion, was prevalent amongst 29.8% of North Dakotan residents.

The same study found that amongst all Americans between the ages of 12 to17 nationwide, the binge-drinking rate was about 8.8%.

Furthermore, Vermont seemed to have had the highest reported underage drinking within the past month with about 36.6% of its residents ranging from 12-20 years of age consuming alcohol.

Utah seemed to set an example for the rest of the nation by locking in the lowest rates of binge-drinking and underage drinking, which were 14.1% and 14.2%, respectively.

Changing the Dangerous Binge-drinking Patterns in Iowa

Binge drinking, or the excessive use of alcohol, has been linked to many deaths, accidents and severe health problems such as alcohol poisoning and liver disease. Furthermore, within the past decade it has become the main focus of Drug and Alcohol Dependency Services, which is funded by state grants in order to hire trained individuals to monitor alcohol abuse patterns within troubled counties across the nation.

According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 75 % of the alcohol consumed by adults in the United States is in the form of binge drinks.

Scott Gooding was hired in Lee County, Iowa to help reduce adult and teen binge drinking. His three year position at Alcohol and Drug Dependency Services is funded by a State Prevention Enhancement Grant from Iowa’s Department of Public Health.

Gooding says he’ll be looking at” local ordinances, advertising and social availability of alcohol in the area” in order to change the dangerous binge-drinking patterns amongst the residents of Lee County, which rank 10th place on the list of Iowa’s top 23 counties with alcohol-related issues.

Teen drug abuse is rampant say cops and counselors in Pleasanton, CA

With half of its student body confessing to smoking marijuana, the school administrators and parents of Hart Middle School, located in Pleasanton, California were shocked after a recent PTA meeting which discussed the dangerous trends amongst the schools’ students.

After interviewing the students of Hart middle school, counselor Tammy Schoonover estimated that 25% of the students drank alcohol and 50% smoked marijuana.

Officer Ryan Tujague, a member of the police department's special enforcement unit warned parents that even the brightest of students were succumbing to marijuana, OxyContin, heroin and other substances, often fooling their unsuspecting parents who could never imagine their daughter/son was purchasing and using illegal drugs to achieve dangerous highs.

Tujague also pointed out the growing crime rate correlated with the growing number of addicts, so often young teens, who are committing the pettiest of crimes in order to be able to purchase drugs and feed their addiction.

Lowering the drinking age - Is this a age a good idea?

The answer to whether the legal age for alcohol consumption should be lowered to 18 from the current legal age 21 remains unresolved while experts, families and educators struggle to put an end to alcohol-related incidents amongst the nation's teens.

Those in favor of lowering the legal drinking age argue that the current legal age for consuming alcohol, 21, has clearly not been able to sway underage teens towards abstaining from alcohol. Furthermore, in 2008 more than 130 college chancellors and presidents signed a petition which supported the age reduction. They believe that proper funding in the education sector will educate teens on the dangers of alcohol abuse while allowing them to experience alcohol and enjoy it responsibly, as oppose to consuming it illegally in discrete locations where so much can go wrong.

But while the idea of lowering the drinking age from 21 to 18, and attempting to deglamorize alcohol in order to reduce alcohol abuse amongst teens seems appealing, many experts and families believe that it would be a step in the wrong direction considering the effectiveness of the law legislated in 1984 which raised the drinking age from 18 to 21 and lowered alcohol consumption amongst young teens. Furthermore, research has shown that delaying the onset of alcohol use reduces the chances of becoming addicted in the future.

Prescription drug abuse up among Valley Youths

Legal drug abuse has become quite popular with youths and the results are borderline devastating. In the last twenty years, the number of minors reporting the use of prescription drugs has steadily increased in areas such as Clovis and north Fresno where drugs like Vicodin and Oxycontin are sold for around forty dollars on the streets.

Even though officials claim prescription drug abuse has increased among teens, no local surveys have been conducted to prove such a statement until last year when the California Healthy Kids Survey also included questions regarding the abuse of prescription painkillers among teens. The questions were added because school administrators reported frequent drug use by the students. George Rodriguez, a social worker with the Clovis Police Department claimed that parental awareness has helped bring attention to the matter and the results have been positive so far.

Many drug agents claim that children trust doctors' prescriptions and don't really think of addiction as an issue, not knowing that most painkillers have the same ingredients of heroin.

Children abusing prescription drugs are usually from middle to upper class neighborhoods whose parents can afford healthcare, making access to prescription painkillers easy and frequent. Parents who use prescription drugs should take every measure to protect their prescription drugs from easy reach. Most importantly parents should educate themselves in how to communicate with their children about the life treating risks of prescription drugs that are take without doctors approval.

TEENS BACK TO SCHOOL – DANGERS OF SOCIAL NETWORKING AND MEDIA TECHNOLOGY

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL - August 10, 2010 – “New omnibus research from the Partnership for a Drug-Free America shows that more than one-third of parents are concerned that TV (38 percent), computers (37 percent) and video games (33 percent) make it harder for them to communicate with their media-engrossed teens about risky behaviors, like drug and alcohol use. The survey of more than 1,200 parents also confirms that a quarter or more are worried that newer forms of media, including cell phone texting (27 percent) social networking sites, like Facebook (25 percent) and Twitter (19 percent) hinder effective parent/child communication about the dangers of teen substance abuse”, according to the Partnerships for a Drug-Free America website.

According to a Kaiser Family Foundation study of 2,000 teens released earlier this year, “the average amount of time young people (8-18 year olds) spend consuming entertainment media is up dramatically to almost eight hours per day – that’s at least 53 hours a week of immersion in some form of media. The research also noted that the more media teens consume, the less happy they tend to be and those who are most captivated by media reported their academic performance suffered. About half (47 percent) of heavy media users reported they usually get fair to poor grades, mostly C’s or lower, compared to about a quarter (23 percent) of light media users”, states the Partnership website.

“These recent findings present a clear picture of the opportunity for Teen Drug Abuse Risk Factors. Common behaviors found in teens who are abusing drugs includes isolation, social life withheld from parents thru password coded or invitation only websites (Facebook, MySpace) social sites or media (YouTube, Twitter,) and telephone texting, in addition to declining academic interest and declining grades, and an immersion in societal perceptions of drug use.”, says Karen Corcoran the Co-Founder of Inspirations For Youth And Families, a teen residential substance abuse treatment center.

Corcoran states: “This research reveals a need for parents to take a more active role in their teenager’s lives. Parents should be aware of how teens are spending their time online and remain aware of the impact all media consumption is having on their teens. Videos of teens using drugs, abusing cough medicine, and becoming intoxicated, are readily available on YouTube and other social networking websites. In many cases, reality television glorifies and sensationalizes drug addiction, teen pregnancy, and dysfunction in the family.” According to Corcoran, a mental health professional and parent of young adults, “It is difficult to gain knowledge of a teen’s social life and friends if communication, along with time spent between parent and adolescent was not previously established. Parents taking time to speak with their children while spending quality time together, are less likely to become isolated from their child-turned-teen and more likely to transition into the role of parental investigator.”

According to research, kids and teen’s cell phone ownership has increased sharply since 2004, from 39 percent to 66 percent in 2009, while ownership of iPods jumped drastically from 18 percent to 76 percent over the same time period. Karen Corcoran of Inspirations for Youth and Families, aka Inspirations Teen Rehab states: “Teen use of cellular telephones, which now includes internet accessibility, further distances the teenager from parental monitoring and protection.” Among kids and teens, cell phone ownership has increased since 2004, from 39 percent to 66 percent in 2009, while ownership of iPods increased from 18 percent to 76 percent over the same time period. Corcoran further states: “ If cell phones and ipods are not enough to create a growing concern regarding teen behaviors, early teenage access to vehicles will definitely initiate a concern regarding the separation that teen driving creates between the teenager and parent. When teenagers are given a car or any motorized transportation, it immediately creates a teen world withheld from the supervision of parents and family.” “Teen drug use, teen drug abuse, and other dangerous behaviors are just the beginning of a teenagers exposure to a world in which teens are unprepared to encounter, when the parent’s ability to monitor a teen is removed,” according to Karen Corcoran.

Inspirations for Youth and Families and their Inspirations Teen Rehab program knows all-to-well, the results of teen behavior and poor choices, associated with over exposure to media and the isolation of teen’s parents it creates. “Teens entering teen rehab, report an ability to withhold most of their daily activities and knowledge of their social life, from their parents and family members,” states Dr. James Hughes, Chief Executive Officer and child psychologist for Inspirations for Youth and Families. LLC.

Teenagers entering their freshman year of high school or returning to high school, presents an opportunity for parents to set new boundaries, begin conversations, and schedule parent and teen talk-time, in an effort to prevent the typical teen behavior issues and teen drug use and teen drug abuse concerns. Take time to talk with your teenager. Create family time. Communication with teens is the best prevention tool a parent can use.
